Collaboration for Growth

Multi-stage investing explicitly dedicated to the global biopharmaceutical industry

The TVM Capital Life Sciences Practice is a dedicated provider of growth and venture capital to the international biopharmaceutical industry with headquarters in Munich and an office in Boston. TVM Capital MENA Ltd. is the operating entity of TVM Capital in the Middle East & Northern Africa (MENA), based in Dubai. In more than 20 years of activity in the sector TVM Capital Life Sciences has financed more than 115 companies of which numerous have gone public to date on stock exchanges in Europe and the United States or have been sold to strategic buyers. Our active portfolio comprises around 40 companies in Europe and the United States.

With currently about €820 million (US$ 1.2 billion) of investment capital under management for equity investments in the sector, the TVM Capital Life Science team invests at all stages of product development and maturity. Specifically, TVM Capital Life Science believes a successful investment strategy should focus on multi-stage investing:

Investment into R&D stage pharmaceutical assets with sufficient capital to derive maximum value and capital efficiency

Capital efficiency is paramount for the industry today —smaller internal teams, strong international networks and international off-shoring and outsourcing are key instruments for reaching this objective. In a time, when every step of the pharmaceutical industry’s value chain is a service business, capital efficiency questions in development can be addressed differently than in the past.

Commitment to developing companies in the existing portfolio over the long term and the ability to identify investment opportunities at growth inflection points

More than 20 years of investing experience backed by extensive operations knowledge provides the team with a high degree of patience and understanding for the challenges and inevitable timelines of company building that is not easily matched in this industry. This is coupled with the ability to finance a company through the capital intensive stages of development, with own money and strong syndication capabilities.

Investments into revenue stage pharmaceutical deals by adding transnational value to companies beyond capital-- growth capital at the revenue stage

There is potential for tremendous innovation in marketing and distribution—simply by bringing products to markets where they are not currently available. Innovation in this area, necessarily capitalizes on the strength in Europe and the US as well as the need of young entrepreneurial biotech companies to grow revenue by bringing some of their new products into markets which they cannot tackle on their own. Bringing products to new markets, however, requires new growth strategies involving transnational acquisition, moving experts around the world, and combining high-value new innovative drugs with profitable and cash flow generating products that serve as cash flow generators.

TVM Capital is well-positioned to support the many investment opportunities that arise from our focused strategy. Collaboration for growth in the global pharmaceutical industry is our objective, enabling the constant building of a "business of innovation”.

TVM Capital Life Sciences is ranked 1st as a lead investor in the German speaking world, and 5th among European venture firms in the number of deals that the firm has lead or co-lead from 2004 onwards outside of its home market. In addition, TVM Capital Life Sciences is the only German based firm that regularly leads or co-leads investments in New England out of its Boston office.

Of particular interest to us are:

  • Small and mid-sized revenue-stage companies in need of restructuring, roll-ups, and strategic M&A
  • Opportunities to create new growth companies through in-licensing or acquisition as a result of pharmaceutical industry strategy or restarts and funding gaps in biotechnology
  • Growth companies with efforts to bridge into other major world markets like the US or into fast emerging new markets like India and China
  • Development stage and revenue stage biotechnology companies in Europe, the U.S. and Asia.
